Walsham Blog Engine

This is the version tracker for the Walsham Blog Engine...currently only in development. The whole thing could do with a rewrite now I know better what to do, but it seems to keep this site chugging along nicely.

Changed the authentication from Sessions to Cookies

There were certain things about the 'session authentication' that bugged me, not least the session ID being appended to urls, but I also didn't find it a very clean way to do authentication, and most sites I frequent use cookies to good effect. Set with the correct length they can be pretty handy and convenient. I can't believe that many people have cookies disabled in their browsers either, as they are so ubiquitous these days. As such, I have put in a basic cookie system, and now will read up on some slightly more secure ways to use them.

Things to do:

A few items that need addressing:

  • Primarily, there is a limit of 5 posts on the sections, but no way to view older posts. Pretty trivial to write, but very necessary.
  • Preview page for the submission forms. Not too important while it's just me submitting, but the comments function works, so I should make it more user friendly.
  • Intelligent (?) amazon and imdb linking for movie submission. Perhaps at the 'preview' page I can accept or reject the automagically decided choice...
  • The formatting of the photos page is horrible.
  • The formatting of comments is terrible, and really need fixing quickly. Probably the next thing to do.
  • The formatting of the movies page is ugly.
  • The random imagerator on the right never formats properly
  • Format format format. Links, stuff, all the above. They all look rather rubbish.

    Testing of new input system

    This should hopefully format in a considerably nicer way than before.

    What else can it do?
    Well, urls should automagically linkify, such as these ones: www.tomwalsham.com
    "http://www.tomwalsham.com"
    http://www.tomwalsham.com, or www.tomwalsham.com.

    And we can add images (that resize to 50px wide, so they don't knacker the layout), thusly:


    Hope this all works, or it's back to the drawing board.

    What really needs doing...

    1. HTML formatting automagically so I can start properly stripping user input
    2. A preview button, before posting
    3. Make Links and Stuff work
    4. Comments section
    5. Email Me form.
    6. Photos page to work!!
    7. archive of all posts
    8. ability to see older posts from individual pages (post.php?arch=231 etc...)
    9. Search facility...not jsut a pretty box that leads nowhere!
    10. Shit I've got rather a lot to do
    11. Category viewing mode...and perhaps options on the input to remind me
    12. check for dead links.
    13. the 'back to home' link to actually do something.
    And no doubt loads more.
